‘Concrete Rose’ was amazing! I did not know what to expect, seeing that it is a prelude to “The Hate U Give”. It did not let me down, and it became more exciting as the pages turned. The gripping drama from his kids’ moms, his street life, his school life, and his parental life made me not want to put the book down. This book kept hitting me in the face!
When I read the summary, I was anticipating the child, Seven. I wanted to know how Seven would fit into a seventeen-year-old boy’s life. I was also interested to see how his family would take the news as well
Once I started reading, I became familiar with the characters. Maverick was just a teenager that did not want to let his dad down, and he wanted to be respected in the hood. He had a mom that wanted nothing more but for him to be safe. She wanted more for him than a life in a gang.
What I loved most about the book was the ability of Angie Thomas to keep Maverick so innocent while being surrounded by so much hurt. This book is not about a boy being swallowed by the streets and eaten by his thoughts. He remained genuine and focused on his plan.
Let’s also talk about Mama Carter exemplifying an amazing mother! She supported Maverick with all his goals while still living her best life. I love the way she helped in any way possible but still held him accountable. She made it noticeably clear that she wants him to succeed no matter the obstacles.
